Sukhothai
Sukhothai (Meaning “Dawn of Happiness”) was the original Capital of the first truly independent Thai Kingdom, once known as Siam in the 13th and 14th centuries. It has a number of fine monuments and superb temples, illustrating the beginnings of Thai architecture. It is also said that King Ramkhamhaeng was credited during the 13th Century for creating the Thai alphabet.
The great civilization which evolved in the Kingdom of Sukhothai absorbed numerous influences and ancient local traditions; the rapid assimilation of all these elements forged what is known as the 'Sukhothai style', which you will become familiar with when you are in Thailand.
The superb temples and monuments in the Sukhothai park are today a UNESCO World Heritage site and a must see destination for those looking for more history, traditional Thai culture and some amazing ancient temples, which will leave you breathless.
Sukhothai is easily accessible by road and is approx 427km North from Bangkok and 350km South of Chiang Mai, so however you get there just make sure that you do.
